Today, my paternal grandmother would have been 92 years old. And 2 days ago, 1 June, my great grandfather would have turned 125. There’s something about this month of June that always brings with it a sense of nostalgia and memories of days and ages gone by… Most importantly however, it gives me the opportunity to remember and realise just where I’ve come from, to help me to keep going to where I want to be 🙏✨🌻
As Maya Angelou so beautifully says,
“I have great respect for the past. If you don’t know where you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going …”
There’s a beautiful term in the Hindu culture “Maa Baap Ni Ashirwad” – Maa is Mother and Baap is father. Ashirwad means Blessing. So the term basically says the blessings of your parents or forefathers. Growing up, my dad would always remind us that we are where we are because of the sacrifices and blessings of our forefathers and ancestors. More so, where one is in there life is often as a result of others along the way who may have helped you in your life, often without us even realising it… As a result, we should always remember to be good, kind and most of all giving and serve others. Like my dad reminded us using the analogy of that typical container of cereal at a hotel that is in one of those tower-type vessels with a turning knob to release a portion of cereal (or those fancy juice/water contraptions too)- if no one keeps on filling it up, eventually there won’t be any left not just for yourself, but others too.
So today, and this weekend to come, I invite you and remind you to remember. Take some time out for you. Look at where you’ve come from. Who helped you get here. Where are you now? And where are you going to?
I feel truly honoured, blessed, humbled and extremely grateful to all my elders, both living and not, who have helped to shape, mould and help me become the person I am, and still aim to be for the world and those around me.
Today, I remember and pay tribute to these amazing souls and others in their own right who are a guiding light and stars on my path. I hope you’re able to feel and find the same in your life and journey too ✨🙏🤍
Be kind and gentle to yourself and those around you. Happy weekend everyone 🎉
Much love always, Poonam
